More Matter: Essays and Criticism by John Updike,

More Matter: Essays and Criticism by John Updike,
John Updike's fiftieth book and fifth collection of assorted prose, most of it first published in "The New Yorker, brings together eight years' worth of essays, criticism, addresses, introductions, humorous feuilletons, and -- in a concluding section, "Personal Matters" -- paragraphs on himself and his work. More matter, indeed, in an age which, his introduction states, wants "real stuff -- the dirt, the poop, the nitty gritty -- and not . . . the obliquities and tenuosities of fiction." Still, the fiction writer's affectionate, shaping hand can be detected in many of these considerations. Herman Melville, Edith Wharton, Sinclair Lewis, Dawn Powell, Henry Green, John Cheever, Vladimir Nabokov, and W. M. Spackman are among the authors extensively treated, along with such more general literary matters as the nature of evil, the philosophical content of novels, and the wreck of the Titanic. Biographies of Isaac Newton and Queen Elizabeth II, Abraham Lincoln and Nathaniel Hawthorne, Robert Benchley and Helen Keller, are reviewed, always with a lively empathy. Two especially scholarly disquisitions array twentieth-century writing about New York City and sketch the ancient linkage between religion and literature. An illustrated section contains sharp-eyed impressions of movies, photographs, and art. Even the slightest of these pieces can twinkle. Updike is a writer for whom print is a mode of happiness: he says of his younger self, "The magazine rack at the corner drugstore beguiled me with its tough gloss," and goes on to claim, "An invitation into print, from however suspect a source, is an opportunity to make something beautiful, to discover within oneself a treasure that wouldotherwise have remained buried.

Laugh Or I'll Shoot Collection: The Naked Gun / Top Secret! / Airplane! (Widescreen)
Laugh Or I'll Shoot Collection: The Naked Gun / Top Secret! / Airplane! (Widescreen)
Available for the first time in one hilarious collectible giftset; the "Laugh Or I'll Shoot Collection" is proof that these outrageous comedy favorites only get funnier with time! "Laugh Or I'll Shoot Collection" contains "The Naked Gun," "Top Secret!" and "Airplane! Don't Call Me Shirley Edition." "The Naked Gun" - Those screw-loose "Airplane!" creators have done it again! Leslie Nielsen stars as Police Squad's own granite-jawed, rock-brained cop Frank Drebin, who bumbles across a mind-control scheme to assassinate Queen Elizabeth. Priscilla Presley, O.J. Simpson, a stuffed beaver, two baseball teams and an odd assortment of others join the wacko goings-on and blow the laugh-o-meter to smithereens. "Top Secret!" - If you were sitting around wondering if the guys who brought you "Airplane!" and "The Naked Gun" are crazy, the answer is "yes." And "Top Secret!" proves it beyond a shadow of a doubt! "Top Secret!" pits American rock star Nick Rivers (Val Kilmer) against the dreaded East German High Command. It's a race against time as Nick teams up with Hillary Flammond (Lucy Gutteridge) to find her father before he can create the ultimate super weapon - the Polaris Mine. Along the way, "Top Secret!" manages to do for war epics and Elvis films what "Airplane!" did to disaster movies. "Airplane! Don't Call Me Shirley Edition" - The persons and events in this film are fictitious - fortunately! A masterpiece of off-the-wall comedy, "Airplane!" features Robert Hays as an ex-fighter pilot forced to take over the controls of an airliner when the flight crew succumbs to food poisoning; Julie Hagerty as his girlfriend/stewardess/co-pilot; and a cast of all-stars including Robert Stack, Lloyd Bridges, Peter Graves, Leslie Nielsen, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar... and more. Their hilarious high jinks spoof airplane disaster flicks, religious zealots, television commercials, romantic love... the list whirls by in rapid succession.
